With regard to the Premier’s announcement in SOPA 2022 that there are six new mobile schools anticipated for completion in 2022/23:
(a) What are the details of the new schools, (b) how much is budgeted for these schools, (c) what is the number of mobile classrooms that will be erected per school and (d) what is the number of teachers that will be employed per school?
(a) The proposed schools are “starter schools” to be expanded over time. The schools are registered for operation and enrolment in the 2023 academic year and will be commissioned and opened in the 2022/23 financial year.
The schools were prioritised as part of a targeted response to the high demand for high school places in certain geographic areas. The schools will be located in Bothasig, Fisantekraal, Klapmuts (2 schools), Nomzamo and Fairdale/Mfuleni.
(b) The budgeted amount for the 6 schools is R90 million for the first phase, including all the LTSM and furniture.
(c) 10 mobile units will be installed as the first phase for all schools, with a default 4 classes for each of Grade 8 and 9, with additional classroom and facility solutions for ablution, administration (principal’s and administration offices and staffroom) and non-teaching areas (spaces for sport, arts, culture and enrichment).
d) The allocation of teachers will be in line with the post provisioning norms and standards as applied in the Western Cape.
