With respect to the Helderberg area:

(1) What is the current demand for learner placement at high schools in the area;

(2) whether there any plans for the building of new schools in the area, specifically for the areas of Sir Lowry’s Pass, Village Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay; if not, why not; if so, what are the timelines for these projects?

(1)     There are eight public ordinary high schools in the Helderberg area.

To estimate current demand we used the enrolment statistics for the 2022 school year. Column 1 represents the total number of applications received and Column 2 the number of learners enrolled across all grades at these schools.

Please note: parents could have applied at more than one of the listed schools. Column 1’s total thus is not a count of unique learners, but rather of applications. Column 1 also reflects applications from parents who do not necessarily reside in the Helderberg area.

We do, however, acknowledge that we are experiencing pressure in these two circuits with regards to demand as a results of population growth and in-migration.

(2)     A contract has been awarded for development of the New Sir Lowry’s Pass High School project. The contract was awarded in November 2021 with current anticipated completion of construction works being April 2024.
