(a) How many students were supported by his Department with full-cost study bursaries in (i) 2018/19, (ii) 2019/20 and (iii) 2020/21, (b) what was the average annual bursary amount per student, (c) how many of the students, who graduated successfully during this period with the financial assistance of his Department, were not absorbed into the payroll of his Department and (d) what were the qualifications of those bursary holders who could not be absorbed?

(a)(i)

A total of 150 students were supported in 2018/2019 financial year (Annexure A)

(a)(ii)

A total of 228 students were supported in 2019/2020 financial year (Annexure B)

(a)(iii)

A total of 186 students were supported in 2020/2021 financial year (Annexure C)

The attached Annexures A-C give a breakdown of the students in terms of the discipline, race and gender.

 

(b)(i)

A total of R9 869 037.95 was spent with an average of R 69 993.00 per student for the 2018/2019 financial year

(b)(ii)

A total of R10 225 186.03 was spent with an average of                          
*R 47 120.00 per student for the 2019/2020 financial year

(b)(iii)

A total of R11 041 944.51 was spent with an average of                          
R 61 119.00 per student for the 2020/2021 financial year

 

  • In 2019/2020 financial year, 83 civil engineering students were undergoing the compulsory in-service training as required by the relevant Higher Education Institution (HEI) in comparison to 2018/2019 which had 55 students while 2020/2021 had 50 students. In cases where the majority of students are undergoing in-service training, there is less expenditure for tuition fees.

 

(c)(i)

Out of 33 students who graduated in the 2018/2019 financial year, 22 graduates were employed by the department, while 7 were employed by the private sector and 4 were released (Annexure D)

(c)(ii)

Out of 30 students who graduated in the 2019/2020 financial year, 17 graduates were employed by the department, while 4 were employed by the private sector and 9 were released (Annexure E)

(c)(iii)

Out of 32 students who graduated in the 2020/2021 financial year, 7 graduates were employed by the department, while 15 were employed by the private sector and 10 were released (Annexure F)

The attached annexures from D - F provide a breakdown of the qualifications which were not absorbed.
