Social Development
With reference to the funding of a new safe space in the Drakenstein Municipality announced in the State of the Province Address:
(a) How much funding will the provincial government be providing, (b) what has the money been allocated for, (c) what venue will be used as the new safe space, (d) what (i) services and (ii) support will the facility offer the residents of Drakenstein and (e) what will be the operating hours of the facility?
The Department of Social Development has been informed that Drakenstein Municipality in partnership with an NPO named G-Voucher (as a service provider) has started a process of purchasing 6 Containers for this safe space. Furthermore these containers of the Municipality will accommodate 40 bed spaces. It was reported that this project is not operational yet.
(a) The Department will ringfence a unit cost funds of 40 bed spaces and post funding for a Social Worker to the amount of R576 470.
(b) To ensure that there are beds spaces and a Social Worker that would provide Psycho-social support, reunification, and reintegration services.
(c) 6 containers are already on the premises of Drankenstein Municipality.
(d)(i) and(ii) Services and Support will focus on:
- Providing bed spaces for homeless adults.
- Providing Psycho-social support.
- Providing re-integration and reunification services.
- Providing integrated shelter services for chronic homeless adults with severe addictions and mental health conditions.
- Provide social and economic skills to assist homeless adults to find employment for sustainable livelihoods.
(e) Operating hours will be determined by the identified service provider.
