  1. What is the South African Police Service doing towards rural safety in the province;
  2. whether he and his Department have considered the introduction of specialised rural safety units to protect the rights of farmworkers, farmers and tourist visiting rural areas in the province; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

The South African Police Services informed me as follows:

2.             (1) SAPS has conducted the following to enhance rural safety:

  • Appoint a Provincial Rural Safety Coordinator, who engages on a regular basis with Agri Western Cape to promote communication between Provincial SAPS, SAPS stations (stations serving rural areas) and Agri Western Cape.
  • A Provincial Rural Safety Priority Committee has been established with other Government Departments in the province to identify serious crimes committed in the rural environment and to address the identified issues.
  • A Quarterly Rural Safety Cross Border operation is executed to address high crimes, including stock theft, in the Clusters adjacent to the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and the Western Cape.
