- How many (a) weapons confiscated from gangsters in the province in the last 3 years have been found to be (i) police weapons, (ii) weapons from the Gauteng Firearms and Liquor Control Unit and (iii) weapons from Firearms and Liquor Control Units of other provinces, (b) of the confiscated weapons had been classified as “destroyed” on the police system, (c) weapons in the Western Cape are in circulation originating from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and (d) (i) arrests and (ii) prosecutions have been secured for (aa) illegal possession of firearms, (bb) ammunition, (cc) theft and (dd) fraud;
- whether the SAPS Western Cape is collaborating with other provinces to track down further incidences of this nature; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
The South African Police Services informed me as follows:
4. (1) (a) (i) (ii) (iii), (b), (c), (d) (aa) (i) (ii), (bb) (i) (ii), (cc) (i) (ii), (dd) (i) (ii)
Two projects are currently under investigation for the past three (3) years pertaining to the theft of firearms in South Africa Police Service (SAPS) custody.
(2) Kindly be advised that the two (2) mentioned projects are still under investigation and thus further information cannot be provided as this could potentially compromise such investigation.
