How many evictions have taken place in the City of Cape Town, during the period June 2011 to June 2014, (b) in which areas did they take place, (c) how many were on (i) public land owned by the (aa) City of Cape Town, (bb) Provincial Departments, (cc) National Departments and (ii) privately owned land, (d) how many of the evictions were from existing buildings/properties, (e) what alternative arrangements have been provided for evictees, (f) what is the current status of the land/buildings from which people were evicted and (g) what role does private role players play in the solution of the problem?

(ii) My Department does not maintain records of evictions from privately

      owned land.

 

          (d)  The 10 evictions from my department’s rental stock and the 59 from the City of

     Cape Town’s rental stocks are from existing buildings.

 

 

(e)  With regards to Joe Slovo Phase 3 evictions, families were assisted in moving their

belongings to an area within the immediate area of construction. Rudimentary     structures were built for the families close to services (water and sanitation). The new structures were re-electrified if the families had access to electricity in their structures.

 

       With regards to the rental stock, alternatives arrangements were not provided.

 

(f)   For the N2 Gateway project, Joe Slovo Phase 3, 222 houses were constructed within

       the area cleared and 174 of these are occupied by approved beneficiaries. As far as

       the rental stock is concern, my department and the City allocates the vacant units to

       qualifying beneficiaries from the housing demand database.

 

 (g) With regards to the Joe Slovo evictions, private role players were only used to

        assist with the relocations.
