Question Number:
7
Question Body:

(a) How many community halls and tents are being used as schools in the province, (b) how many children are attending these schools, (c) in which areas are these schools located, (d) how long will the community halls and tents be used as schools and (e) why are these learners not enrolled in formal schools?

Answer Body:

(a)  There is one community hall currently being used in Phillippi

(b) The number of learners is not static, as learners are being placed everyday.

The original group mainly comprises late applications. Some parents have taken their children out of other schools and have placed them in the hall.

District officials have given priority to children without places and have asked parents to return their children to their original schools, as required.

Local schools have enrolled some of the learners.

(c)  Phillippi

(d) The department is in the process of installing two mobile classrooms at Kwa Faku Primary and one at Vukani Primary, which will provide places for all of the learners.

The WCED has appointed additional teachers for the learners. District officials have developed a catch-up plan.

We appeal to parents not to take their children out of school if they already have places. We have to give priority to children who don’t have places in school.

(e) The majority of the learners are late applications with some learners whose parents failed to enrol them at schools in the area on time.  The WCED will continue to accommodate new learners as they migrate and relocate. A small percentage of the population is always on the move.
