Community Safety
- Whether Metro Law Enforcement Officers were deployed in Nyanga during the 2014/15 festive season; if so,
- whether they participated in the programmes embarked upon by South African Police Service (Nyanga) in conjunction with local community structure; if not, why not; if so, (a) what was the results and (b) outcome of their participation?
The Cape Town Metro Police informed me as follows:
- During the festive season “hot spots” were identified and prioritized in partnership with SAPS. Daily deployment took place by Metro Police during the festive season within the Nyanga Cluster.
- A total of 5 crime prevention operations were conducted in conjunction with SAPS which resulted in a total of 2 (two) x drug related arrests and 1 (one) x possession of firearm arrest.
Focus driven operations were executed to close down problematic shebeens. Throughout the festive season the Metro Police also concentrated on driver and vehicle fitness in Nyanga. During this time 26 (twenty six) x “Driving Whilst Intoxicated” arrests were recorded in the area.
Bylaw operations were also a focus point during this time. A total of 29 (twenty nine) related fines were issued.
