- What are the expected outcomes of the special economic zone at Atlantis and (b) how many companies have invested in the green economy in the Western Cape?
(a) Outcomes of Atlantis SEZ
The Atlantis Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has been designated for the manufacturing of green technologies and related services. The Atlantis SEZ will be the initial focus of the Special Economic Development Infrastructure Company (SEDIC). The SEDIC is being established to drive multiple infrastructure programmes. The SEDIC will develop and hold critical large-scale infrastructure for economic development. The primary purpose will be to drive economic returns in line with the broader provincial economic strategy and sectoral objectives; and to ensure that key economic infrastructure platforms are developed to enhance competiveness, support private sector investment, and expand and create jobs.
Over the medium term, SEDIC identified the following objectives:
- Developing and managing the Atlantis SEZ;
- Facilitating and conceptualising future catalytic infrastructure projects
- Creating an infrastructure-based investment climate;
- Supporting sustainable communities;
- Engaging stakeholders and partners;
- Keeping abreast of market and investor needs;
- Creating an effective and accountable organisation; and
- Strengthening economic growth and job creation.
Number of companies that invested in green economy
By promoting and stimulating a green economy within the Western Cape, the overall goal is to increase investment into green industries (goods and services) and improve the resource efficiency of businesses, in turn leading to increased resilience in the face of resource and other challenges, competitiveness and sustainable employment creation and growth.
Table 1 below outlines the list of companies who have invested in the green economy for the period 2014/15 to 2018/19:
