What are the current statistics for teenage and youth substance and drug abuse for (a) Kannaland and (b) Oudtshoorn?
According to the SACENDU report statistics for the reporting period of January – June 2017 a total of 2909 people accessed services for substance abuse treatment in the Western Cape. This data was gathered from 32 specialist sites dealing with substance abuse treatment.
Considering the 2909 that accessed services in this period; 29% of this total were treated in inpatient facilities and 71% treated by community-based services. Furthermore, 71% of the totals were patients under the age of 34.
There is no funded specialist substance abuse service provider in the Kannaland and Oudshoorn area.
Service users accessing Department of Social Development services in the two areas can be reported as follows:
- Kannaland
In the Kannaland area for the 2017/18 financial year 33 youth have been screened for substance use disorders. 33 have been engaged in substance abuse programs on a community based level. 5 have been refereed for inpatient treatment services, whilst 3 attended aftercare programs.
- Oudtshoorn
In the Oudtshoorn area for the 2017/18 financial year 82 youth have been screened for substance use disorders. 17 completed community based services, 4 have been referred to inpatient treatment and 4 received aftercare services.
In terms of the verified data for all ages in the 2 areas in question the Department of Social Development rendered Early Intervention Services to 136 service users in Oudtshoorn, and 18 service users received aftercare services. In the Kannaland area 59 service users received Early Intervention Services whereas 3 received aftercare services.
In the current financial year April – June 2018 the Oudtshoorn service delivery area rendered early intervention services to 15 service users and the Kannaland area reached 21 service users. 3 service users from the Kannaland area received aftercare services in the Kannaland area.
