With reference to the registration and final placing of learners for the 2019 academic year:

Whether she can provide detailed updated information about (a) the number of learners who have applied, (b) at which schools applications have been made and (c) how many learners have been placed at schools to date; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body: 

          

(a)      96 492 unique individuals, 139 181 applications including for multiple schools

(b)      At all schools in the province.

 (c) The WCED recorded 71 460 successful applications (single count – GR R Excl.) applications as at 13 Aug 2018. 

 The WCED is mobilising all resources to resolve cases where learners have not yet been placed.  This includes the following measures:

 ·       Resolving learners accepted at more than one school (8101 places). Schools and Districts are following up with parents to resolve.

·         Identifying under – utilised schools and classrooms and engaging SGBs to open up additional classes by the end of this year for 2019.

·         Opening up New Schools and Mobile classes for 2019

·         6 New schools being opened between September 2018 and February 2019

·         5 new mobile schools (40 mobiles)

·         Expansion of existing schools (46 mobiles)

·         Use of existing mobile school in Hout Bay
