Question Body:

Whether there are any hospitals in the province where asbestos was used as construction material; if so, (a) at which hospitals and (ii) what is her Department doing to rectify this?

Answer Body:
  1. The information is not recorded in the requested format. Asbestos was used in building material prior to 2008 after which it was banned in South Africa.
  1. The Department does not have a detailed assessment of asbestos presence in facilities built prior to 2008, when asbestos use was banned. The Department, through its Infrastructure Management and maintenance projects, inspects facilities and when asbestos is found in material at facilities it is rectified through the intervention of a specialised contractor in accordance with the Health & Safety Act and Regulations. When it is found on site, during renovations and/or demolition building work, the specialised contractor ensures that the recovery process ensures adequate dust (from asbestos fibres) control.
