Question Body:

With regard to the fire incident that destroyed parts of the Swartland Hospital:

  1. How many patients have been transferred to other hospitals to date, (b) to which hospitals have these patients been transferred and (c) how much have these transfers cost her Department since the incident?
Answer Body:

The service platform in its entirety has been re-structured to allow for the most efficient service delivery across the Swartland Sub-District and its bordering sub-districts.  This means that certain functions/services were diverted to other facilities to limit the pressure on Swartland Hospital and to ensure easier access to definitive care for patients.  Therefore only a limited number of patients actually required inter-facility transfers for acute services or admissions, whereas patients who required a specific service were seen at these facilities primarily.  Transfers to Paarl Hospital other than maternity cases were appropriate for level 2 referrals.

Re-structured service platform: Diversion of services to the following facilities

  1. Estimated number of patients transferred/diverted
  1. Facility
  1. Estimated costs involved

240

Paarl Hospital,

R40 968.00

4000

Wesfleur Hospital

R3 million annually (this is service costs and not transfer costs)

1200

Radie Kotze Hospital

R 168 948.00

5

Citrusdal

R1039.00

*These numbers only indicate inter-facility transfers/diversions.  Day trips for OPD services like x-rays and specialist clinics as well as day theatre cases at other facilities are not included in the above.  An additional driver was appointed at SWH on contract.  Additional GMT vehicles were hired to make the extra trips.  Six additional EMS staff members were appointed on contract estimated to cost R710 000 annually and an additional vehicle was added to their fleet in order meet operational requirements for various purposes.
