In 2014, YearBeyond started as a pilot and became a fully-fledged programme in 2015, after which monitoring of volunteer progression began.
The Monitoring System
The details of all volunteers are recorded on a spreadsheet and updated by a staff member at Action Volunteers Africa (AVA), the NGO who manages the volunteer cohort. AVA contacts the full cohort of volunteers at specific times of the year to update their records. Further updates are made when alumni make contact with AVA.[ii]
In March 2018, AVA appointed a part-time staff member to manage the Alumni and database. In June 2018, an event is planned to launch the AVA Alumni Association to ensure the continued involvement and support to our Alumni.
[i] Note: The higher than usual volunteer numbers in 2017, are as a result of volunteers dropping out of the programme to take up studies and employment. These volunteers were then replaced to ensure the numbers of the group remained at around 110 on average during the year.
[ii] Note: Not all volunteers are contactable due to outdated contact details.
