- How many forensic pathologists has her Department employed this year;
whether there are plans to employ more pathologists; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
1. The Directorate Forensic Pathology Service: Department of Health currently employs twelve (12) Forensic Pathologists, five (5) Heads of Clinical Units and two (2) Heads of Clinical Departments. It further employs 11 Registrars which are Pathologists in training. They are appointed on a four (4) year training contract period and generally require another year to conclude their dissertation prior to being registrable as Forensic Pathologists.The Directorate did not appoint any additional Pathologists for this year (2018). There were two posts which became vacant in 2017 which was filled by candidates. The one post vacated by the internal candidate will now be converted to make provision for a Registrar training post.
2. The Directorate can only fund posts within its Approved post list (APL) and available funding and therefor do not have any plans to appoint additional Pathologists. The cost per capita attached to the post of a Forensic Pathologist equals R1,700.000.
