Police Oversight and Community Safety
With respect to detainees escaping from police custody between January and May 2022 in the province:
(1) (a) How many have escaped (i) in police vehicles in each cluster, (ii) from police holding cells at each police station and (iii) from physical police detention facilities and (b) how many of the aforementioned escapees have been rearrested again;
(2) whether there have been any investigations into these escapes; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
(3) whether there were any SAPS members who have been found negligent or responsible for these escapes; if so, what are the relevant details?

[2] A criminal case is opened in the case of an escape from police custody.
[3] When a suspect escapes from police custody an investigation is launched into the circumstances. If the police official has been negligent, disciplinary steps will be taken against him/her. All the above cases which was referred for an internal disciplinary hearing, are still pending.
