[1] Whether any schools in Mitchells Plan took part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;

[2] whether her Department provide any support to cycling clubs in townships in order to take part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;

[3] whether her Department support various sport clubs in Mitchells Plain; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details for [a] soccer, [b] chess, [c] rugby and [d] netball?

Answer Body: 

[1] The following schools in Mitchells Plain competed in the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour:

  • Cedar High
  • Oval North Technical School
  • Beacon Valley High
  • Rocklands High

[2] The Club Development programme in conjunction with the Nedbank Sport Trust cycling development programme and Cycling South Africa ensures that support is provided to cycling clubs to participate and compete in community races, league races and the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.

  • Oval North – Mitchells Plain

Supported the following clubs via the CDP programme with equipment, transport and capacity Building Courses:

  • Cape Town Giants – Mitchell’s plain (Cape Metro)
  • Kinetic Cycling Club – Parow (Cape Metro)
  • Siphiwo Cycling- Khayelitsha (Cape Metro)
  • Steenberg Cycling – Steenberg (Cape Metro)
  • SteynvilleCycling Club – Piketberg (West Coast)
  • Saldanha Cycling Club – Saldanha (West Coast)
  • Kranshoek Cycling Club – Plettenberg bay (Eden)
  • De Doorns Development Club – De Doorns (Cape Winelands)

[3] These are the following clubs supported via the DCAS club development programme in the Mitchells Plain area:

  • Soccer – None, no club was nominated by their Federation in the current cycle.
  • Netball – Cedar United Netball Club, Weltevrede Netball Club and assisting and support is given to the Mitchells Plain netball sub-union.
  • Chess – Mitchells Plain chess club
  • Rugby – none were nominated by their Federation in the current cycle
