There are established and agreed processes that the South African Police Service follows to publicly release the quarterly and annual crime statistics.
SAPS has developed a draft crime statistics dissemination policy that seeks to define the nature of the crime-related information that will be released, the period of the release, the intended use of crime figures and the conditions under which this crime information will be released.
Furthermore SAPS is committed to ensure that crime statistics is disseminated in line with the best international practices and remains willing to adhere to the General Data Dissemination Standards (GDSS) and therefor have an objective to have the crime statistics certified by the Statistician General as official statistics. Subject to the reversal of the Cabinet decision on the release of crime statistics, SAPS are bound to the current process for the release of crime statistics, unless directed otherwise by Cabinet; crime statistics can only be publicly disseminated after been released by the Minister of Police.
