Whether transport for learners is being made available for learners who by necessity have to travel from Sonskyn valley to St Luke’s Primary School, Brandwag, Mossel Bay; if so, (a) why, seeing that the distance is 11,3 km and (b) how many learners are affected?
No transport is made available by the WCED.
[a] No transport is not being made available for learners from Sonskyn Valley to St Luke’s Primary School. Hartenbos Primary School is the closest school to Sonskynvallei (around 3kms). St Luke’s is the school of choice of the parents. The policy of the WCED on learner transport is clear that when an appropriate school is available within 5km from the residence of a learner and the parents or learner choose to attend another school that is 5 kilometres or further from the residence of the learner, the parent or learner is responsible for and shall bear the cost for the transport to that school of choice.
