What programmes do his Department have to address the issue of young people on the Cape Flats abusing alcohol?
Forty-six [46] Non for Profit organisations are funded to render substance abuse services across the four levels of intervention [Prevention, Early Intervention, Treatment and aftercare]. The substance abuse program has a budget of R63 352 000 for the 18/19 financial year. The services are not limited to alcohol specifically but all substances across all ages, which includes services to children, youth and adults. Four [4] organisations are implementing early intervention programs targeting youth at high risk schools (Kuilsriver, Eersteriver, Steenburg).
The Department of Social Developments local offices also provide substance abuse services in the Cape Flats communities.
The Department of Social Development forms part of the Alcohol Harm Reductions Game Changer which is currently piloted in 3 areas on the Cape Flats. A clear referral pathway was developed to ensure that service users have easier and immediate access to social workers and service providers.
