What are his plans to rescue the (a) Beaufort West, (b) Kannaland, (c) Matzikama and (d) Cederberg municipalities?
The above-mentioned municipalities form part of the Back to Basics Programme, which have comprehensive municipal support plans. Post the 2016 local government elections the Department conducted high-level assessments at all four (4) municipalities, to determine whether their individual support plans are still relevant and whether any additional challenges and areas of support could be identified. Pursuant to this exercise and based on the additional findings, my Department revised these customized support plans.
A consultative process with the relevant municipalities, as well as the sector departments involved will now implement these support plans. The Department will within the limited resource envelope assist these municipalities with the implementation of their support plans.
In the case of Kannaland our approach will, however, be different due to the nature of the findings, coupled with the fact that there is a total administrative leadership vacuum at the Municipality. In the case of Kannaland Municipality, the Department will provide hands on support.
