- The priority codes are identified at national level by Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA), supported by the Department of Basic Education (DBE). The codes are split into Winter, Summer and Autumn Games as indicated below:
WINTER GAMES:
- Chess
- Netball
- Football
- Hockey
- Rugby
- Tennis (national competition in Winter despite it being a Summer code; federations’ choice)
- Volleyball
SUMMER GAMES:
- Basketball
- Boxing – not sanctioned by DBE and hence not being supported; in its place some provinces have chosen to support baseball
- Cricket
- Table-tennis
- Goal ball (for visually-impaired learners)
- Gymnastics
- Softball
AUTUMN GAMES:
- Athletics (track & field)
- Aquatics (swimming)
- whether her Department supports all 16 priority sport codes; if not, why not; if so what are the relevant details;
RESPONSE:
- All the codes are supported, excluding boxing as it is not sanctioned by DBE and hence not sanctioned by SRSA as a School Sport priority code.
All other 15 priority codes are supported to have provincial play-offs in order to qualify to compete at the SA National Schools Championship (SANSC). All codes are competing in 2016 and supported by DCAS. DCAS covers all the costs related to transport, accommodation, catering, attire, logistical and medical support to participate at the SANSC, which takes place annually.
In place of boxing, we support baseball. We have supported Western Cape Baseball Association in the 2016/17 financial year and in previous years as well.
- whether her Department supports specific age groups (for example under 18s) in these priority sport codes during competitions; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
RESPONSE:
