How is the Minister dealing with the high tensions in communities that are affected by the housing protest that is taking place in Gugulethu, Nyanga and Philippi?
My department has a clear programme for the communities from the areas in question.
The qualifying beneficiaries which includes backyarders will be accommodated in the Southern Corridor Projects as well as in the Gugulethu and Nyanga Infill Projects.
Officials from my department have been engaging with the communities regarding the housing opportunities in the respective areas.
I have personally met with the backyarders from Gugulethu on 24 March 2018 to share with them progress around the opportunities.
This was a follow-up to the meeting I had with the community on 4 March 2018.
My department is in the process of acquiring parcels of land in Gugulethu, Nyanga and Philippi in order to maximise opportunities for backyarders.
We have approached the private land owners in the respective areas and I am waiting for their response to our offers to purchase.
