In relation to the SAPS communique (reference: 27/3/5(2)), dated 15 July 2022:

(1) (a) What are the current safety risks associated with the Cape Town Iron and Steel Works (Cisco) that prevent it from being recommended as a designated firearm-destruction facility and (b) what needs to be implemented for it to be recommended as a firearm-destruction facility;

(2) whether the national Ministry of Police is able to allocate resources to assist Cisco with the necessary improvements; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body: 

[1] [a] There are numerous risks involved in the operating process of the site which deems it unsuitable to be a safe designated firearm-destruction facility.

      [b] A Memorandum of Understanding will have to be drafted in order to accommodate SAPS and the Standard Operating Procedures of the company, taking legal requirements/obligations and the operational needs into consideration.
