Question Body:

Whether there is a backlog at the Salt River mortuary due to the recent strike; if so, what are the relevant details?

Answer Body:

At that time when the strike was called on 27 June 2017, the Salt River Forensic Pathology laboratory had 45 cases awaiting post-mortem examination. During this period the facility still conducted 22 autopsies and released 21 bodies.

Between 27 June and 24 July:

  • 340 cases was admitted,
  • 335 autopsies concluded, and
  • 333 cases handed over for burial.

The current waiting period from admission to post-mortem examination is what had been already been experienced prior to the strike with increased caseload.
