(1) Whether the Department has any training in place for the neighbourhood watches in Mitchells Plain; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;

(2) how many police vehicles are currently operational at the Mitchells Plain Police Station;

(3) how many police vehicles are currently operational at the Lentegeur Police Station;

(4) what are the relevant details regarding the opening of the Tafelsig Police Station?

Answer Body: 

[1]  Yes, the Department of Community Safety provides  Neighbourhood                       

Watch training.  All accredited Neighbourhood Watches throughout the Western Cape can access training opportunities since Section 6 [Accreditation of Neighbourhood Watch Structures) of the Western Cape Community Safety Act of 2013 came into effect on 1 October 2016. We have made good progress to ensure alignment between the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town in the training and issuing of equipment to NHW structures.

The Department of Community Safety provided training to Neighbourhood Watch members from the following areas within Mitchell’s Plain:

2016/17

  • Westgate                         9 trained
  • Woodlands                      1 trained
  • Westridge                        2 trained
  • Highlands Village            11 trained

2015/16

  • Beacon Valley                 10 trained
  • Eastridge                          17 trained
  • Portlands                          9 trained
  • Morgenster                      2 trained
  • Tafelsig                             22 trained
  • Rocklands                        2 trained

THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE INFORMED ME AS FOLLOWS:

[2]      Total vehicles allocated to Mitchells Plain SAPS: 105

[3]      Total vehicles allocated to Lentegeur SAPS: 44

[4]    Tafelsig SAPS is currently in the planning and design (finalisation of cost estimates and architectural plans) phase.
