1[a]  Overseas visits were only undertaken by the Executive Mayors and officials of the following Municipalities:

  • City of Cape Town;
  • George Municipality; and
  • Witzenberg Municipality

City of Cape Town

         a. The Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town undertook the following six [6] trips to the following countries:

  • United Kingdom
  • Turkey
  • Netherlands
  • United States of America
  • France
  • Mexico

CITY OF CAPE TOWN TRIP 1 OF 6 – UNITED KINGDOM

[a] How many overseas trips were undertaken by the executive mayor in the period January 2016 to January 2017?

Mayor and the then Director for Strategy & Operations.

Mayor was invited to speak at the International Growth Centre’s Cities Research Conference.

The Mayor has been elected as one of the founding members of the “Cities that Work Council”.

 Executive Mayor and Cllr Xanthea Limberg [the then Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services], Denver van Schalkwyk [Manager for International Relations].

Investment Promotion Tour to the cities of Izmir, Bursa and Istanbul.

 

[ii] What were the outcomes of the visit?

  • Expression of expanding business interest by investors in the Cape Town.
  • Re-affirmation of direct flights from Cape Town to Turkey by Turkish airlines.
  • Expression of interest by prospective Turkish investors in Green Economy space.
  • Securing follow up meetings by Turkish investors ie. the Izmir Development Agency [IZKA]

To attend the launch of the Global Parliament of Mayors.

The City of Cape Town is now part of an exclusive group of global cities constituting the Global Parliament of Mayors [GPM]. The Mayor was elected as part of the GPM’s Steering Committee. Finally, the Mayor was also elected as the GPM’s Interim Chairperson.

Investment Promotion and Cultural Relations Tour, i.e. Atlanta for the signing of the Atlanta-Cape Town Letter of Intent; Newark [Jazz/ cultural ties]; New York [inward investment] and Los Angeles [film sector] as well as San Francisco [technology start-ups].

 

[ii] What were the outcomes of the visit?

  • Establishment of potential direct flights between Cape Town and the USA.
  • Establishment of a Cape Town Jazz Institution and digitization of the of Cape Town jazz history.
  • Successful opening of Pizza Hut franchise in Cape Town – New Employment Opportunities.
  • Lobbying the DTI to change its current rebates and incentives schemes for the foreign filming industry.
  • Selection of the City to be one of ten [10] cities for the launch of AirBnB’s new Trips Initiative.
  • Agreement between the City and a major social media company as well as a local mobile operator to launch a major innovation initiative during the latter part of 2017.

To attend the Second Meeting of the Champion Mayors for the Inclusive Cities Campaign.

The Mayor was elected as one of the eight founding Champion Mayors for the Inclusive Cities Campaign and through resources being made available by the OECD and Ford Foundation, the City has been able to increase its efforts to achieve its strategic intent of being an inclusive city.

Executive Mayor and Zara Nicholson, the Mayoral Spokesperson.

Attending the C40 Climate Leadership Group’s Bi-annual Conference in Mexico City and to sign a Sister City Agreement with the City of Monterrey, Mexico.

 

[ii] What were the outcomes of the visit?

  • Exchange best international practices pertaining to the City’s efforts to address climate change.
  • Establishment of a collaborative partnership with the City of Stockholm regarding waste to energy initiatives,
  • Signing of the Sister City Agreement with the City of Monterrey, Mexico has the potential to improve investment relations between Monterrey and Cape Town based businesses.

The Executive Mayor attended an International Mayor's Conference in Israel.

Knowledge sharing and the Mayor met with high tech entrepreneurs as well as their counterparts in Israel.

13 November 2016 to 19 November 2016

Israel

World of Atonia in Jerusalem, Hilton in Tel Aviv and Dead Sea Hotels.

No contribution from the Municipality.

No contribution from the Municipality. The trip was sponsored by American Jewish Congress, Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Israel Federation of Local Authorities, Jerusalem - Tel Aviv and Haifa municipalities.

Securing funding   for multi-year programmes.

22 May 2016 to 29 May 2016

6 days

 

[f] What destinations were visited?

Belgium - Essen and Vaalbeek.

All accommodation and travelling cost were paid by Essen Gemeente.
