  1. Whether any measures have been put in place to prevent the further theft of firearms and other dangerous weapons from the Mitchells Plain Police Station; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
  2. whether suspended and/or dismissed personnel who have been implicated in the theft of firearms at the Mitchells Plain Police Station have been replaced; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
  3. how many police-owned or -confiscated firearms have been stolen from the (a) Mitchells Plain and (b) Lentegeur police stations in the (i) 2015/16 and (ii) 2016/17 financial years?
Answer Body: 

The South African Police Service informed me as follows:

(1)                      Yes: The Station Commander ensure compliance to National Instructions and Standing Order (Stores).

                           A Firearm Action Plan has been compiled to ensure regular physical firearm inspections are being conducted by Performance Management, Cluster Firearm Inspection Teams and unannounced visits by Standby duty officers.

        (2)                             The members have currently been suspended; they cannot be replaced at this stage.

        (3)(a)(i)          Mitchell’s Plain: Police owned: 2015/2016 = 0

                               Mitchell’s Plain: Police Confiscated: 2015/2016 = 0

                        (ii)      Mitchell’s Plain: Police owned: 2016/2017 = 1
