With reference to his recent visit to Kleinmond in the Overstrand Municipality:
Whether there were any findings, concerns and opportunities; if so, how does his Department plan to address it?
Unfortunately, due to reasons beyond my control I could not visit Kleinmond and did therefore not attend a meeting between the Overhills Community, Overstrand Municipality, Provincial Government, Human Rights Commission, South African Police Service and other stakeholders which took place on 14 September 2017 in Kleinmond.
The Provincial Government was represented by the Minister of Community Safety, Mr Dan Plato and the Minister of Finance, Dr Ivan Meyer
I am however informed that it was a very successful meeting where the following issues were raised and discussed.
- Tenders for the Cleaning Services in Kleinmond
- The lack of a graveyard in Hangklip/Kleinmond area
- The behaviour of the South African Police during the riots.
- The entrance to Kleinmond Harbour
- Lack of recreational facilities for the youth in town
A follow up meeting was held on 12 October 2017. The meeting was facilitated by Dr Braam Hanekom from the Centre for Public Witness where a report back to the community was provided on the issues raised at the 14 September 2017 meeting. I attach hereto a copy of the minutes of the meeting held on 12 October 2017.
The most positive aspect of the meeting was the envisaged establishment of a Social Compact Forum, a suggested diversity workshop in social cohesion in order to bring communities together as well as a suggested meeting for the establishment of a unified business chamber which was to be held on the 23rd of October 2017.
It is suggested that the honourable member engage with the various role-players as identified in the minutes of the 12 October 2017 meeting to obtain an update on the progress made on the matters initially raised.
