Whether transport to schools paid for departmentally is available to learners who live in Brandwacht, Mossel Bay; if not, why not; if so, (a) to which schools and (b) how many learners are being transported?
4.The primary school learners have access to St Luke’s Primary School in Brandwacht, Mossel Bay and do not need to be transported. The department only provides transport to learners living in rural areas who live more than 5 km from their nearest school, and where public transport and hostel accommodation are not available.
Learners attending the High Schools in Mossel Bay enjoy hostel accommodation at nearby schools.
The WCED does therefore not supply transport from Brandwacht to Mossel Bay in addition to the hostel subsidy, because it will then be considered as double subsidy which is against policy and for which we are not funded.
In terms of policy, the WCED provides transport to learners in rural areas who live more than 5 km from their nearest school, where public transport and hostel accommodation are not available.
