Whether his Department is ensuring that current building projects in the province, as contracted by his Department, have water-saving measures in place; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
Yes, details of the water saving measures are as follows:
- Non-potable water sources are used as far as possible for construction purposes where it does not compromise the quality of the finished product (i.e. in plasters, screeds, washing of plant, road construction, etc.). Non-potable water is currently obtained from boreholes on site, as well as from Waste Water Treatment Works in the area (i.e. Macassar, Zandvliet). My department is in the process of investigating the option of sinking further boreholes, as well as pursuing other sources of non-potable water subsequent to the ones mentioned above. In some cases, contractors have already sunk their own boreholes.
- Potable water is strictly used through approved and registered standpipes, with usage being submitted to the City of Cape Town monthly.
- The usage of both potable and non-potable water are now being recorded, reported and submitted with all monthly payment certificates. Payments of these claims are subject to contractor’s clearly demonstrating compliance as stated above. Water saving is also a standing item on all site meeting agendas, with all contractors being kept aware of their roles and responsibilities in this regard.
Water saving devices and products are being implemented on
numerous projects, i.e. water saving cisterns (Lifewise Eco-loo,
Waterwise 2000), water harvesting (gutters and tanks).
