With respect to the 41 schools that have applied to install solar panels on their rooftops:

(1)     (a) Which schools have applied and (b) what is the expected power output of each school’s solar panel installation;

(2)     (a) how much would it cost to install these solar panels at each school and (b) which of these applications are being funded by the (i) school itself and (ii) Department;

(3)     of the schools that are planning to procure emergency lighting and back-up battery power as an alternative, (a) which schools have done so and (b) how much will it cost to procure?

[b]    See table above. The power output and the value of the investment at each school differs and is an arrangement made between the schools and the companies concerned. The Department does not have a register for each.

To assist with the query, the Department contacted each school to collate the information required.

[b] They are either all funded by the schools themselves (using School Governing Body funds), or the schools have entered into lease agreements with companies/organisations such as the Sun exchange (a solar leasing platform). The Department has supported such initiatives in our schools.

[3] [a] The Department does not have record of which schools have procured emergency lightning and back-up battery power.

As indicated on the “Sun Exchange” website, Tamboerskloof PS is the first school solar plant equipped with a battery storage system, meaning that they can keep on teaching even during the routine power-cuts that are impacting education all over the country.
