SC Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning
The Standing Committee on Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning will be conducting oversight visits along the northern part of the West Coast where the focus will be on the potential environmental damage caused by mining activities along the coast as well as the rehabilitation of the areas that have already been mined and where responsibility rests. The Committee will also be visiting the Tronox Namakwa Sand and Mineral Sands Resources (Pty) Ltd mines. The Matzikama Municipality, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning and CapeNature will accompany the Committee on the visits. The Knersvlakte Nature Reserve will also form part of the itinerary where the focus will be on the poaching of succulents and other unlawful activities. The visit will conclude at the Olifants River estuary where the focus will be on the conservation and the impact of prospecting for minerals, particularly in relation to the its effect on the Papendorp community.
