With regard to the release of the police-recorded crime statistics for the first quarter of 2022/23 financial year:

(1)   (a) What is the breakdown of these crimes by police station in the province, (b) what factors contributed to the 0,2% increase in the murder rate and (c) what is the breakdown of murders by police station in the province;

(2)   (a) what is the breakdown of murder cases by (i) age, (ii) race and (iii) gender, (b) what is the breakdown of the multiple murders by police station and (c) what were the motives in each case?

Answer Body: 

[1]     [a] The breakdown of the crime statistics are attached as per Annexure A.

         [b] The reported crime statistics as released for the period April to June 2022 was compared to the data for the same period during 2021. During the period April to June 2021 the country experienced the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

The National Sate of Disaster was lifted on 5 April 2022. The comparison of the reported crime for the periods April to June 2021 and 2022 is therefore skewed due to the mentioned factors.

An analysis of the causative factor contribution to the overall murder figured for the April to June 2021 and 2022 periods was conducted and revealed that there were increases in murders that are due to arguments that are not domestic related and also showed an increase in murders that are acts of vigilantism/mob justice.
