Police Oversight and Community Safety
(a) (i) What factors contributed to the 6,6% decrease in sexual offences and (ii) what is the breakdown of these crimes by police station in the province and (b)(i) what factors contributed to the 4% decrease in rape and (ii) what is the breakdown of this crime by police station in the province?
[a] [i] After the repealing of the regulations relating to the Disaster Management Act a greater number of cases relating to sexual offences were placed on court rolls Province. The resulted in more cases being finalised with an increase in convictions. These convictions are being covered in the media, which is a deterrent to would-be perpetrators.
The implementation of GBV Desks at all Police Station in the Province and the embarking on monthly awareness campaigns specifically focusing on sexual offences have created awareness of the dangers and risks surrounding these crimes.
[ii] The breakdown of sexual crimes by police station is attached as per Annexure A.
