With reference to the complaint letter from the Futures Academy dated 20 November 2022 regarding what they called “concerning conduct by WCED NSC monitors and invigilators”:
- What are the details of all steps that have been taken by his Department to investigate allegations of harassment against (a) an appointed invigilator, whose name has been furnished to his Department for the purpose of his reply, which involved inappropriate comments and conversations with young learners at the school, (b) a NSC examination monitor, whose name has been furnished to his Department for the purpose of his reply, which involved two incidents of approaching and touching female learners;
- whether the school has been updated regarding the progress of these investigations; if so, (a) what are the relevant details and (b) what are the updates and outcomes of these investigations;
- (a) what are the details of all the actions and steps that have been taken by his Department to investigate allegations of inappropriate comments in the examination room about Muslim female learners;
- (a) what are the details of all the actions and steps that have been taken by his Department to investigate all other allegations of unprofessional conduct and the intimidation of candidates by NSC examination monitors and invigilators at the school and (b) what are the updates and outcomes of these investigations?
6. My department has informed me of the following:
- (a) and (b)
Futures Academy is an independent school writing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination.
The Department has confirmed that they received a telephone call from the principal of Futures Academy regarding the conduct of one of the examination invigilators.
The invigilator allegedly made an inappropriate comment to two of the learners.
The Department was also informed of alleged inappropriate conduct of one of the independent exam monitors.
The Department replaced both persons and has instituted an investigation into the matter.
The Department is also evaluating the processes followed by the principal at the centre.
