- What has happened to the site on which the old GF Jooste Hospital was located, (b) what are the future plans for the site, (c) how much has the provincial government spent on the old GF Jooste Hospital since its decommissioning as at the latest date for which information is available and (d) what is the breakdown of what the funds were spent on?
(a) The site has been vacant since closure of the hospital. It has since been identified for utilization for educational purposes.
(b) A new secondary school is being constructed on the site, namely the Manenberg School of Skills. Construction of the new facility began in July 2022. However, during September 2022 the contractor was threatened with extortion and the site was closed (work halted) pending resolution through engagements with the South African Police Services (SAPS), local law enforcement and community organisations. In the same month the department was served with a legal challenge by an aggrieved contractor seeking a legal review of the tender award process. The challenge included an interdict to halt construction activities until the matter is resolved. The matter is set down for review in court in February 2023. The current practical completion date for the facility is envisaged to be September 2024, but this is subject to the outcome of the afore-mentioned court process.
(c) The Department of Transport and Public Works has spent R19,642,631.41 since the decommissioning of the hospital.
