Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning
- (a) What criteria are considered when assessing applications for the keeping of exotic wild animals and (b) how often are inspections undertaken to ensure adherence to the conditions in terms of which the permits were issued;
- (a) how often is the well-being of these animals monitored and (b) what role do animal welfare organisations play to assist his Department in this regard;
- how many cases of (a) neglect, (b) malnutrition and/or (c) non-adherence to conditions in terms of which permits were issued by the Department were identified and resolved in the last five years?
- (a) Criteria considered when assessing applications include adequate captivity enclosures, adequate fencing, duty of care, maintenance and criteria for management plans.
(b) Inspections to ensure adherence to the conditions in terms of which the permits were issued are undertaken annually.
- (a) Well-being of animals are monitored annually when the inspections to ensure adherence to the conditions in terms of which the permits were issued are undertaken.
(b) Animal welfare organisations do not assist CapeNature when inspecting and/or issuing permits to these facilities.
- (a), (b) and (c) CapeNature has not identified any cases of neglect, malnutrition and/or conditions in terms of which permits were issued in the last five years.
