In relation to the incidents of vandalism and burglary that occurred at schools over recent festive season:
- How many incidents of (i) vandalism and (ii) burglary occurred, (b) what items were vandalised and/or stolen, (c) what is the total cost of repairs and replacement as a result of the vandalism and burglary and (d) how much did his Department provide in subsidies for security at schools during the school holiday?
My department has informed me of the following:
(a) 48 incidents of burglary and/or vandalism affecting 42 schools were reported during the holiday period.
- Items damaged/vandalised included, roof sheets and ceilings, copper plumbing, water meters, fencing, windows, doors and locks, WiFi and electrical cables, Distribution Board (DB) boxes, toilets, and safety gates.
Items stolen included, microwaves, drain covers, laptops, USBs, hard drives, computers, projectors, amplifiers, Wifi dongles, plugs, electrical leads, urns, a food processor, cutlery, taps, gas stoves, gas cylinders, pots, lights and light fittings, fencing, gardening equipment, garbage bins, cleaning supplies, bicycles, sensor beams, kettles, power mixer, mixer board, speakers, microphones, sewerage pumps, fire hydrants, toilet flush masters, printer, laminating machine and borehole pumps.
- The estimated cost of damage and theft, as reported by the schools, was R759 943.
- R11 772 327 was allocated in the 2022/2023 financial year for holiday security.
R5 623 948 was spent for December 2022 to January 2023 holiday period.
