Whether she is aware of the reported incidents of extortion and/or protection fees demands facing local businesses especially in the townships; if so; (a) what is the extent and impact of extortion syndicate to the Western Cape economy in general and township economy in particular, (b) what is the number and details local businesses that have been targeted and (c) what programmes has her Department put in place to address this?
Answer Body:
Yes.
- I have requested that the Department undertake further research to better understand the impact on the provincial economy and can update the member when this report is finalised.
- (i)(ii) This information should be requested from the South African Police Services.
- The Department does not have extortion related programmes in place currently. Further information should be requested from the Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety on the province’s response to extortion.
