With regard to the number of applications for free houses:
-
- What has been his Department’s delivery in 2022/23 in this particular area of need;
-
- whether those who are staying in informal settlements are catered for; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details?
- My Department delivered 1068 sites and 4923 houses for the period 1 April 2022 to 28 February 2023.
- All Western Cape citizens including informal settlement residents are encouraged to register on the Western Cape’s Housing Demand Database (WCHDDB), irrespective of where they live. This a requirement to qualify for housing subsidies and assistance including free housing. Therefore, residents who reside in informal settlements can and have been registering on the WCHDDB. My Department and all Western Cape Municipalities actively and continuously encourage all Western Cape citizens to register themselves on the WCHDDB.
Further to the above assistance provided by the Department to those who register on the WCHDDB, a total of 33 projects are also currently funded by the Department’s 2022/23 Informal Settlements Upgrade Partnership Grant (ISUP-G) Business Plan benefitting various informal settlement communities and residents. These projects are all at different stages of project preparation, planning, or implementation. Implementation plans include the installation or upgrading of services to include access to clean water, sanitation, and electricity, and in other cases access to basic services on a shared ratio basis. 12 of these projects are in the implementation stage, with 5 projects delivering 1 583 serviced sites.
