What are the timelines set out by Prasa for the reopening of the entire Cape Town central line?
PRASA have indicated that they are working towards a full restoration of the Central Line by December 2023. However, this date is dependent on the relocation of illegal dwellings in the railway reserve, between Philippi and Langa. The relocation of these dwellings are essential to rebuild the track along this section, as the infrastructure has been completely compromised.
The Mobility Department is facilitating a temporary solution with PRASA and the City of Cape Town to clear the immediate rail envelope to allow trains to pass through.
PRASA have also indicated that they are on track with their “station restoration” programme along the Central Line. Contractors are on site and they are making good progress to rebuild the stations to a serviceable condition.
