Minister of Education
(a) How many school resource officers (SROs) are currently deployed at schools in the province, (b) at which schools are these officers deployed, (c) what training do these officers receive and (d) which schools will receive SRO deployments in 2023/24?
My department has informed me of the following:
(a) The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s (CoCT) Law Enforcement Unit has deployed 28 School Resource Officers (SROs) at 14 schools at risk.

- The CoCT law enforcement provides training on matters pertaining to their core functions as law enforcement officers. They would be better positioned to provide a full detailed list of their training requirements.
The WCED does additional training which includes:
- Roles and responsibilities within the School Safety Committee.
- An understanding of the school context.
- Crime prevention programmes (Holiday Programmes and After School Programmes).
- Building of relationships with the school’s staff as well as with learner and parent groups.
- Restorative approaches in dealing with learners.
