Question Number:
1
Question Body:

Regarding the infestations of alien vegetation, particularly pines, next to the Gobos River, a few kilometres upstream from Greyton:

(a) To what extent are these infestations occurring on land under the management of CapeNature,

(b) how severe are these infestations and (c) where do these trees appear on the ranked priority list for alien clearing?

Answer Body:

(a) Approximately 50% of the upper portion of the Gobos River catchment above Greyton is managed by CapeNature.

The remaining 50% comprises declared mountain catchment area jointly managed by Theewaterskloof and Overberg District Municipalities.

(b) Infestations on the land managed by CapeNature ranges from medium (41-60%) to very high (>80%).

(c) The whole area is predominantly infested with cluster pine, Pinus pinaster, estimated to be around 61 - 80% in density on average, ranked high priority and mostly along steep to very steep slopes. Clearing along steep to very steep slopes necessitates specialized teams such as the High Altitude Teams (HAT) supplied by Working on Fire, however, DFFE NRM has disbanded the WoF-HAT teams in January 2023.
