A few sectors are responsible for funding of water infrastructure projects in the province. Departments of Water & Sanitation (DWS), Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) as well as the Department of Local Government assist in this regard.

  1. DLG has allocated R 28,696 million towards water projects for the 2022/23 -2023/24 FY in the province.
  2. Projects planned and currently underway at various stages of the project cycle:
  • i. Planned for the 2023/24 FY a total of R 21,290 million has been allocated for transfer to municipalities for projects such as infrastructure and water treatment upgrades, drilling and equipping of boreholes, artificial recharge of aquifer.
  1. Projects currently underway for 2022/23 a total of R 7,406 include water demand management, smart water meters and leak detection, water augmentation, infrastructure repairs, and bulk water supply.
  2. The scope and nature of the projects vary from specialised to general skills. The detailed scope of work will determine the labour intensiveness of the work packages. The implementing municipalities are required to follow EPWP guidelines to ensure as many jobs as possible are created through converting some of the activities from machine operation to labour intensive. Therefore, the number of jobs to be created cannot be determined at this point in time.
