How many confiscated firearms are currently in storage and pending destruction in the Western Cape?
The reply of the South African Police Service (SAPS):
14. There are currently 189 firearms in storage and pending destruction.
These confiscated firearms, are those, which have been subjected to various mandatory and time-consuming investigative processes, such as identification, ballistic testing, verification audits and forfeiture procedures, and have subsequently been approved for destruction.
Forfeiture procedures and destruction of confiscated firearms may only be conducted subsequent to the finalisation of the investigation of the relevant case docket, as well as the processes mentioned above.
