What is the current vacancy rate at the Plattekloof Forensic Laboratory and (b) what is the current backlog of samples related to sexual offences in the Western Cape?
Answer Body:
(a) The current vacancy at the Plattekloof Forensic Laboratory amounts to 19 forensic analysts. The vacancy rate will be addressed by appointment/ placement of BSc graduates that are presently undergoing the basic police training.
(b) The historical Western Cape DNA Backlog which was at 89 158 in Q2 2021/22 has been reduced to 6 in Q1 2023/2024 as on 2023-05-26 which indicates that it has been reduced by 99.99%. The total DNA entries not yet finalised exceeding the prescribed timeline is at 7 888 as on 2023-05-25.
