Question Body:

With regard to the H-2A Programme that allows US employers or US agents who meet specific regulatory requirements to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary agricultural jobs:

What is the number of farm workers from the province who have participated in the programme in (i) 2019, (ii) 2020, (iii) 2021, (iv) 2022 and (v) 2023 to date, (b) what is the (i) race, (ii) gender and (iii) age of the workers, (c) what is the salary range for the participants in the H-2A Programme per annum and (d) what role do his Department and the provincial government play in assisting workers to participate in this programme?

Answer Body:

4.         The Western Cape Department of Agriculture is not aware of any agri-workers who have previously participated in the H-2A Programme. The Department is however aware that South Africans have been recruited to work on farms in the USA but is not in a position to confirm whether it is general citizens or agri-workers who previously participated.

Furthermore, the Department does not know the salary range per annum for participants in the H-2A Programme. The Department has been approached by the US Consul-General for possible assistance in marketing the H2-A programme, with discussions being in its initial stages. The relevant information pertaining to the H-2A programme has been shared with the Prestige Agri Worker Forum as well as other agricultural industry partners for their consideration and potential participation.
