Question Number:

Question Body:
  1. How many sport facilities have been (i) vandalised and (ii) robbed in the past five years, (b) what are the costs incurred due to vandalism and robberies in the past five years and (c) what is her Department doing to mitigate the impact of vandalism and robberies on sport facilities?
Answer Body:

Sport facilities falls within the ambit of local municipalities as indicated in Schedule 5A of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, and as a result this question would be best placed to the local and district municipalities across the province or through the Department of Local Government to get the detail information requested.

The Phillippi football stadium when it was built was earmarked as a base and a training venue for the FIFA World Cup 2010. After the  FIFA World Cup 2010, the facility was ceded back to the Western Cape Government to manage and maintain and as a result it is possible to report on vandalism and robberies at the venue.

In June 2021 the Philippi Stadium was vandalised with an estimated damage of R40 million which includes the upgrade for it to be SASREA compliant. To avoid further theft and vandalism and with the assistance of the Department of Infrastructure, additional security has been added.

When new facilities are planned and developed through the MIG funding specific allowance is made to ensure the facilities are protected against vandalism and robberies. Once the facility is completed it is handed over to the municipality and the security of the facility becomes their responsibility.
